Consuelo

Consuelo is a small flat-water kitesurfing spot near Antofagasta, shaped by consistent south-to-southwesterly winds that are reinforced by a strong desert thermal effect. The spot’s best wind months are typically January, February, March, April, and also November and December. Wind is described as steady, with a typical wind range of about 15–25 knots, making it well-suited to intermediate riders looking for predictable conditions. Conditions are driven by a thermal sea-breeze style pattern that builds in the early afternoon and peaks late in the day. During spring and summer, the thermal window is often cited as roughly mid-afternoon through early evening, and regional guidance describes the strongest daily window as about 1:00 PM to 6:30 PM in warmer months. The primary wind direction for sailing is south (with S/SSW commonly noted). Reliability is described as very high during summer due to consistent coastal thermal effects. The main challenge is the very small, technical launch area with rocks around it, plus sea-urchin hazard on the shoreline. The launch is tight and requires extra care with lines, so riders should expect a more technical setup than at larger sandy beaches. Because the beach is small, it’s important to manage traffic around launch and land—avoid loitering in the operational zone and be mindful of other riders. Water is described as clean and generally flat, with shallow areas near shore and deeper water further out in the bay. The water temperature is cool year-round due to the Humboldt Current, with a commonly cited range around 14°C to 20°C, so a wetsuit is important. For safety, rescue availability is supported by maritime rescue services, and the nearest major medical facilities are in Antofagasta (roughly 20–30 minutes away).
