Dichato (Biobío)

Dichato is a sheltered bay setting focused primarily on flat-water kitesurfing and foiling. The shoreline and in-bay conditions are reported as clean and generally beginner-friendly, with a medium-sized launch/landing area and no reported tide dependency for kitesurfing. The wind is most valuable for powered sessions because it tends to reinforce from the south to south-west as the day warms. Wind is described as south/south-west thermal breezes (“Surada”), with reliability improving through spring and summer. Reports commonly describe the strongest, most consistent winds arriving in the afternoon (often around 13:00–19:00, sometimes after about 2 PM). Typical wind speeds are given as roughly 15–25 knots during the usable periods. Kitesurfing is the best match: the bay is relatively flat for freeride and hydrofoiling, and beginner level is explicitly indicated. Kite size ranges of about 9–12 m² are reported as most common for average-weight riders. In contrast, the inner-bay surfing conditions are usually too sheltered for significant waves, with poor wave quality and only larger swells reaching the bay. Cold-water preparation is essential. The water is consistently cold due to the Humboldt Current, so a thick wetsuit is required year-round; boots, a hood, and gloves are recommended in cooler months. Safety guidance emphasizes respecting summer swimming zones and avoiding crowded peak-afternoon areas, where kitesurfing can be restricted. Rescue is indicated as limited, so self-sufficiency and hazard awareness around boats/moorings are important.
