El Colegio (Colegio)

El Colegio is an exposed reef break in Iquique known for heavy, fast right-hand waves and world-class quality. It’s generally described as an expert-only spot because the takeoff and landing zone sit over shallow reef with sharp rocks and sea urchins, plus it can generate very violent water movement when the swell is at its biggest. The wave is reported to start working around 3 to 3.5 m and to hold massive energy over roughly 5 m and beyond. Reports describe very long ride potential, commonly around 50 to 150 m, with exceptional days extending up to around 300 m. The break’s character is repeatedly described as hollow/tubular and strongly barreling on the best sets. Wind and swell pairing is crucial. East to east-northeast winds are the preferred/offshore alignment for grooming the wave, while onshore directions are described as unfavorable. Conditions are also reported to be especially strong when southern to south-southwest swell combines with offshore east to east-northeast wind; one set of swell-direction guidance focuses on south/southwest, while another emphasizes west/northwest/southwest swells. Reports also note that the cleanest conditions are often found in the morning-to-late-morning window. Safety and local handling are the priorities: hazards consistently listed include rocks and urchins, along with shallow water and strong currents. Local guidance emphasizes respecting the priority expert lineup and paying close attention to entry and exit points; boots and appropriate wetsuit protection are recommended. Crowding is typically very low, but the wave’s extremity means it’s not a beginner-appropriate venue.
