Pelee Point (Pelee Island)

Pelee Point is an exposed Lake Erie freshwater point break known for having consistent surf when the right storm pattern produces a rideable short-period wind swell. Ideal wind is reported as east-northeast, with offshore east-northeast conditions emphasized as the preferred wind setup. The break is strongly shaped by the point’s sandy/pebble spit and nearby sandbars. When conditions line up, waves can peel along the sandbars, and the wave quality is described as average to good. The reported optimal swell direction is southwest, and the best reported swell-size window is given as roughly 1.0 to 2.5 meters. The break is generally exposed with all-tides working. Safety is the dominant factor for this spot. Multiple sources stress extremely strong currents and a dangerous confluence where sides of the point meet, with drownings reported in the broader tip area. The very tip is also subject to strict prohibitions for swimming and can be closed to pedestrians and water users. Rocks (including rocks in the lineup) and submerged debris/logs are additional hazards. Because the water is cold, a winter wetsuit setup is strongly recommended, including a neoprene hood, gloves, and boots. When it works, the spot can get crowded, though it is also described as well-known within the Great Lakes surfing niche rather than mainstream. Overall, it’s an advanced/experienced surfing location where correct storm timing, careful access decisions, and respect for park restrictions are essential.
