About this spot

About

Sachuest Beach (Second Beach) in Middletown is an open, sandy Atlantic beach break with clean water and a long shoreline that makes kitesurf launching and access straightforward. Conditions include shallow-to-head-deep water depending on tide, with sandy bottom and a fairly wide playing area that can work well for learning and progression. For kitesurfing, wind is most favorable across late spring through autumn (June, July, August, October, and November). Wind directions and patterns reported for the spot include strong seasonal onshore/side-shore setups, with sea-breeze/thermal behavior described in summer afternoons. Typical sessions are described with light gustiness, and the sand slope is noted as supportive for beginner-to-intermediate riding when conditions are within expected wind ranges. Surfing is described as fairly consistent at this beach/point-oriented shoreline, with waves breaking both left and right and working on north winds with southeast swells. Wave quality is reported as good to moderate overall, with shelter level generally exposed to the Atlantic. One source notes the break can hold from waist-high up toward overhead-size, while larger swells can trend toward closing out over the higher end of the reported working range. Safety is a major theme: rip currents and longshore currents are specifically highlighted, along with a shore break that can be powerful—plus rocky/submerged hazards near the ends/points and fixed infrastructure like jetty structures. Summer swimmers and seasonal swim-area enforcement mean there are important kite/windsurf restrictions during guarded periods, including limits on where and when you can launch or ride. Cold water is also emphasized throughout much of the year, so thick thermal protection is typically required beyond mid-summer.

  • Long sandy beach for straightforward access and launches
  • Consistent surf for beginners with exposed Atlantic energy
  • Strong late-spring through autumn wind season for kitesurfing and wing/foiling
