Santos del Mar (Constitución Coast)

Santos del Mar is an expert-only big-wave left on a shallow reef-rock slab, known for powerful, hollow, barreling barrels and a serious “slab” feel. The bottom is reported as reef with sharp rocks/coral and a rocky ledge, and hazards are consistently emphasized: rocks, reef, coral, and heavy power in a remote setting. The wave is notoriously infrequent—reported as rarely breaking (around only a handful of days per year). It typically starts working around roughly 3 to 3.5 m and can hold major size well beyond 5 m, but it remains fickle: sessions often depend on enough swell energy and the correct timing of the tide. Sources consistently point to low tide as the key condition, with best results also described on a falling tide. Wind conditions are part of the recipe: optimal wind directions are commonly given as South-West, South, and South-East, with South and South-East winds described as giving the cleanest wave faces. Reliability is described as moderate, with at least moderate gusting reported, so plan for changing face conditions while waiting for the peak window. Access is one of the defining challenges. Reaching the peak is usually not a simple walk—guidance repeatedly notes long paddle time (often more than 20 minutes) or a boat trip, and parking is described as very limited and remote. Crowd reports emphasize it stays empty on both weekdays and weekends, aligning with the difficulty of access and the extreme nature of the break.
