Vaihu (Rapa Nui)

Vaihu is a remote, exposed reef break on the south coast of Easter Island (Rapa Nui), aimed at experienced surfers. It is described as only working when conditions are just right—both for wave shape/cleanliness and for safe access to the launch area. The wave setup is characterized as a powerful reef break with surf breaking against cliffs in an open bay setting. It is typically a right-hand break and is most effective with a meaningful swell from the south/southwest. When conditions connect well, it can produce medium-length rides; however, on larger days it can become very heavy and paddling out may be challenging. Wind conditions are noted as highly sensitive for surf quality. North or Northeast winds are described as needed for clean, groomed faces, but overall wind consistency is only moderate—the spot is primarily sought for wave quality rather than dependable wind alone. Seasonal timing varies by source: surf-forecast data indicates April as the best month, while other notes highlight January and February as the best time of year for surfing on Rapa Nui. Safety is a major consideration: hazards include sharp volcanic rocks, sea urchins, and strong currents/rips. The spot is also remote and difficult to access, with guidance recommending a local guide or tour for visiting the bay area. There are no lifeguards, and rescue is described as limited; the nearest hospital is in Hanga Roa (about 10 kilometers away).
