Banc de Pabos (Le Rocher-Percé, Quebec)

Banc de Pabos is a sand-bar surfing spot on the south coast of the Gaspé Peninsula, located between Grande-Rivière and Chandler with access via Route 132. The break is described as sometimes breaking reliably enough to surf when conditions line up, and it produces both left and right waves. When it’s working, it favors a “normal” wave size window that starts around 1.0–1.5 m and can hold up to roughly 2 m or more, with the sandbar tending to maintain shape up to about that level. Conditions are commonly tied to northerly winds (North, NorthWest, NorthEast), which are noted as optimal because they tend to provide clean/offshore grooming of the wave face. The most favorable swell direction is reported as southwest through southeast (SouthWest, South, SouthEast). Wave quality is generally described as good to fun, with medium ride length expectations and short punchy sessions—typically under 50 m. Tide positioning matters: low and mid tide are highlighted as best, especially when conditions are on a rising tide between low and mid levels. The spot is generally exposed, and wind shadows can occur very close to shore from nearby high terrain/cliffs on northerly winds—so wind checks near the launch area are important. Safety and comfort are the main priorities. Scattered rocks and potential submerged obstacles/debris near the river outflow are explicitly noted hazards, and the water is cold year-round (peaking in late summer around the mid-teens °C). No lifeguards or dedicated rescue availability are reported, so plan gear accordingly (including a thick wetsuit plus added cold-water pieces like boots/hood as needed) and follow standard surfing etiquette.
