Dakhla Lagoon (El Argoub)

Dakhla Lagoon (El Argoub) is a large, shallow lagoon setup with crystal-clear water and big sandy space for launches, making it a standout flatwater playground for wind and water sports—especially kitesurfing. Conditions are generally described as flat to choppy, with chop increasing when the wind strengthens later in the day. The wind is most often NE, with a seasonal peak from April through September. Multiple sources report excellent reliability (over 300 windy days per year for the Dakhla area), and that wind typically builds through the morning into the afternoon. A thermal reinforcement pattern is commonly noted, with the strongest period often occurring around mid-to-late afternoon. For kitesurfers, the lagoon’s standing areas and broad launch options support both beginner progression and more advanced freestyle/freeride sessions, while stronger afternoons can bring extra gusts and chop. Wingfoiling is reported as possible thanks to generally protected lagoon waters and sufficient depth in at least some areas, though spot-specific foil-friendliness is described with some uncertainty. Safety is a key theme: dunes can create wind shadow and turbulence at certain launches, and downwind currents are reported in the lagoon area. Also plan around hazards such as stingrays (reported), intense sun reflection off sand and water, and operational boundaries like avoiding oyster farms in the eastern/southern lagoon sections and staying clear of fishing nets.
