El Puerto (Atacama)

El Puerto is a fairly exposed right-hand reef/pier surf break near the Arica harbor. It’s described as inconsistent or unreliable, with waves that may be difficult to access reliably unless the swell and wind line up well. When it does work, the reef/pier setup can produce a decent run along the reef, especially when swell is large enough. Best reported conditions combine a southwest swell with southeast offshore wind, which helps clean up the wave face. Wind can be especially important here because harbor infrastructure and nearby cliffs can create wind shadows, and overall wind reliability is noted as low. Early morning is commonly reported as offering the cleanest offshore conditions, while afternoon sea-breeze periods are common. Because the break is over reef and pier structures, hazards are a key part of spot planning: submerged rocks, slippery entry areas, and sea urchins are noted. Harbor boat traffic is also a concern, and access may be restricted during harbor operations. If there’s been heavy rain upstream (rare for the region), check water quality since runoff can collect in harbor areas. Water temperatures at the spot are reported around the mid-teens Celsius (about 16°C in the spot-specific notes), and a wetsuit is generally recommended. The spot is described as unlikely to be crowded even when surf is present, but locals may be on good days—so priority at the peak is part of good etiquette.
