Pupuya (Navidad)

Pupuya (Navidad) is a central Chile coast spot known for reliable, strong south-to-southwest winds and long, left-hand wave potential. Conditions are most associated with the Surazo thermal sea breeze: wind typically begins around late morning (around 10:00) and becomes more established into the afternoon, with very high consistency during the austral summer months. For kitesurfing, the spot is described as especially good for wave-oriented riding and freeride, with small-to-medium waves and a medium-sized launch/landing area. Reported wind strength commonly sits around 15–25 knots, frequently rising toward 20–30 knots in the most consistent months. Kite size ranges cited are commonly 6–9 m during strong wind periods. Water conditions are cold year-round due to the Humboldt Current (often around 12–15°C), so a thick wetsuit is considered mandatory even in summer. Safety considerations emphasized include strong lateral currents aligned with the wind direction, strong shore break, and rocks near/offshore around the island—along with reduced or altered wind immediately behind the large offshore island (wind shadow). Beyond kitesurfing, the spot is also described as having strong windsurfing wave conditions with manageable waves for intermediate riders, and growing wingfoiling interest where riders can use downwind flatter sections. Surf potential is characterized by long, left-hand waves over sandbars, but in larger swells it can close out over 4 meters and the exposed nature of the break increases afternoon choppiness when Surazo kicks in.
