Charatan (Mehdya, South Section)

Charatan is a rivermouth left-hand surf spot at the mouth of the Oued Sebou in Mehdya. It’s characterized by fast, hollow, powerful waves that form off the jetty area, earning a regional-classic reputation when the swell arrives. The wave typically needs a meaningful swell to break properly. Reports commonly state it starts working around 2 to 2.5 meters and can hold very large swells up to about 5 meters and beyond. The strongest results are tied to mid to high tide (including rising tide) and to the right swell line (North, Northwest, and North-East directions are highlighted). Wind-wise, the spot is favored with North, Northwest, or West winds. Some descriptions emphasize staying clean with lighter winds or offshore conditions, while noting the jetty can provide some protection from northerly winds. Wave quality is repeatedly described as excellent/“regional classic,” with long rides reported—often around 50 to 150 meters normally, and about 150 to 300 meters on better days (with some reports extending beyond 300 meters). Safety is a key consideration: hazards include rocks near the jetty, river debris, strong river mouth currents, heavy shore break, and pollution/turbidity linked to the river discharge. Avoid going right after heavy rain, and watch the current closely when the river is flowing strongly. Crowds are generally lighter on weekdays and can become very crowded on weekends when good swells bring experienced surfers.
