Essaouira Bay (Essaouira Coast)

Essaouira Bay is a wide, curved sandy bay on the Essaouira coast, known primarily for highly reliable Atlantic trade-wind kitesurfing. The wind regime is consistently described as N to NE with strong afternoon reinforcement from thermal effects, with peak times often late afternoon. The bay’s shape and long sandy beach provide a large setup and launch area across much of the curved shoreline. For kiteboarding, conditions are commonly described as choppy with small to medium wave action depending on where you ride in the bay. Reports also note that the southern side of the bay tends to be windier than directly in front of the town, and that low tide can expose flatter water zones and make launching easier. Surf is present as a beach-break with both left and right waves; Mogador Island offshore helps reduce the impact of the largest Atlantic swells, though extreme swells can still lead to heavier conditions and possible closeouts. Water and temperature are cool year-round due to the Atlantic, with typical water temperatures hovering around the high teens to low 20s Celsius depending on month. Shallow areas near shore can be significant at low tide, and this matters for both wingfoiling (where depth improves farther out) and general safety around wading swimmers. Wind shadowing and gustiness are reported near the harbor wall and the first few hundred meters by the medina-side beach. Safety planning is important: swimmers and beachgoers are a repeated hazard (especially in warmer months), and fishing boats/nets near the port area add risk. Mogador Island is a protected bird sanctuary and landing is forbidden. Rescue availability is described as limited overall, but spot information and watersports schools indicate that on-water assistance is more likely to be coordinated during peak periods.
